Wind mitigation inspection in Lee and Collier County
$200. Official OIR-B1-1802 form, photos and permit records, usually delivered within 24 hours.
Why it matters
Florida requires insurers to offer discounts for construction features that reduce hurricane damage. Your insurer can't apply those discounts unless a licensed inspector documents them on the state's Uniform Mitigation Verification form. Many homes in Southwest Florida are paying for wind coverage without credit for features they already have.
What I check
- Building code: the year built and permit dates, which I pull from county and city records.
- Roof covering: the material, permit date and product approval number.
- Roof deck attachment: the nail size and spacing that hold the plywood to the trusses.
- Roof-to-wall attachment: toe nails, clips, single or double wraps.
- Roof geometry: hip, gable or flat.
- Secondary water resistance: whether a sealed underlayment is under the covering.
- Opening protection: impact windows, doors, garage doors and shutters.
Wind mitigation questions
How much can a wind mitigation inspection save?
It depends on your home and insurer, but documented features like a hip roof, roof-to-wall clips or straps, a secondary water barrier and impact-rated openings can reduce the windstorm portion of a premium substantially. Your agent can tell you the exact credits once the form is on file.
How long is a wind mitigation report good for?
The OIR-B1-1802 form is valid for up to five years, as long as no changes are made to the roof or openings.
Do I need to be home?
Someone needs to give access to the attic and the home. The inspection usually takes about an hour.
Can you do a wind mitigation and 4-Point at the same time?
Yes. Most insurers ask for both on older homes, and doing them in one visit saves you time.
Need a report for your insurance company?
Most wind mitigation and 4-Point reports are delivered within 24 hours of the inspection.
